Every car on the road in Cyprus needs a valid road tax licence (άδεια κυκλοφορίας). You renew it online on the Road Transport Department (RTD) portal, and you need valid insurance and MOT first. This guide explains how to pay, the deadline and late fee, the 3, 6, 9 and 12-month options and how the amount is worked out. Use the calculator below for a quick estimate.
Last checked: 19 October 2026, against the RTD's road tax notices for 2024 and 2026, the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Law (Law 86/1972) on CyLaw and the out-of-court fines table.

To renew your road tax
- You need valid motor insurance
- You need a valid MOT if your vehicle is due one
- Renew online on the RTD portal. Since June 2024 renewal is online only, and RTD offices, Citizen Service Centres (ΚΕΠ) and post office service points (ΚΕΠΟ) help if you can't do it online.
- Paying after the deadline adds €10 plus 10% of the fee
How much is road tax in Cyprus?
It depends on the car:
- Cars first registered from 2014 pay based on CO2 emissions. The cleaner the car, the lower the tax.
- Older cars pay mainly based on engine size (cc).
- Every car pays at least €10 a year.
The exact rates are in the first schedule of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Law. To find your car's CO2 figure, use the RTD's emissions lookup by make and model. The renewal page also shows the exact amount for your car before you pay.
How to pay road tax online
Since June 2024, road tax is renewed online on the RTD portal. You do not need an account.
- Open the road tax renewal service.
- Enter the registration number and the last 3 digits of the owner's ID or reference number (field C.9 on the registration certificate).
- Choose the period: 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.
- Pay by card.
- Wait for the "Print road tax licence" screen. It shows the expiry month and year. The renewal is complete only when you see it, so save or print it.
If you can't renew online, the RTD district offices, Citizen Service Centres (ΚΕΠ) and the post office service points (ΚΕΠΟ) can help you.
JCC and banks. The RTD's notices list only its own online service, so pay through the RTD portal.
A few vehicle types, such as classic cars, embassy and UN vehicles, still pay at RTD offices.
What you need before you renew
- Valid insurance for the car.
- A valid MOT certificate, if the car is old enough to need one. See our MOT guide.
- Any unpaid road tax from earlier periods. Arrears can be paid in instalments through the RTD.
If you just bought the car, finish the transfer of ownership first. Unpaid road tax passes to the new owner.
6 months or 12 months?
You can renew for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months. Shorter periods cost more over a year:
| Period | Cost |
|---|---|
| 12 months | the full yearly amount |
| 6 months | 55% of the yearly amount |
| 3 months | 27.5% of the yearly amount |
Two 6-month renewals cost 110% of the yearly amount, so 12 months is cheaper if you can pay it at once.
Road tax deadline 2026 and late fees
- The deadline. By law, you have 70 days after your road tax expires to renew it without a surcharge. For the 2026 renewal, the deadline was extended to 31 March 2026.
- The late fee. After the deadline you pay €10 plus 10% of the tax due.
- No reminders. The RTD does not send reminders, so note the expiry date yourself.
- After 1 year and 70 days without renewal, the car's registration is cancelled and the unpaid tax becomes a debt.
The RTD announces each year's renewal and deadline in December, as it did in its notice for 2026.
What if you drive without road tax?
- The fine for driving without valid road tax is €85.
- No MOT means no road tax. While a car has no valid MOT, its road tax counts as suspended.
- Driving a car declared off the road also costs €85, and in court up to €1,000 or six months in prison.
Our guide to traffic fines and penalty points lists the other fines.
Not using your car? Take it off the road
If the car will stand unused, declare it off the road (ακινητοποίηση). Otherwise the road tax keeps adding up.
- How: online on the RTD portal (you need to register for RTD online services), or with form ΤΟΜ 12Β at an RTD office, ΚΕΠ or ΚΕΠΟ.
- From when: the first day of the next month. Pay any arrears up to then first.
- Refund: unused months of your current licence are refunded.
- To drive again, renew the road tax. You need a valid MOT for that.
How to check your road tax
Enter your registration number in the RTD renewal service: it shows the next period you need to pay for. To see your renewed licence again, repeat the renewal steps. The RTD's vehicle details service shows more, but it needs a login.
New driver with your first car?
Road tax is one of four things every car owner keeps up to date, with insurance, the MOT and your licence. If you are still learning, practise with the free road signs test and rules test. If you have moved to Cyprus with a foreign licence, check whether you can exchange it.
