Fill in the details to see the amount
This is an estimate based on the law. The RTD portal shows the exact amount before you pay.
To renew your road tax
- You need valid motor insurance
- You need a valid MOT if your vehicle is due one
- Renew online on the RTD portal. Since June 2024 renewal is online only, and RTD offices, Citizen Service Centres (ΚΕΠ) and post office service points (ΚΕΠΟ) help if you can't do it online.
- Paying after the deadline adds €10 plus 10% of the fee
How the road tax calculator works
The calculator follows the road tax schedule in the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Law. Choose your vehicle, then enter what drives the amount:
- Cars first registered in Cyprus from 2014 pay by CO₂ emissions in g/km. Each slice of CO₂ is charged at its own rate, and from 2019 the total is capped at €1,500 a year.
- Cars registered before 2014 and motorcycles pay by engine size in cc, plus a fixed fee. For cars registered from 2007 to 2013 the amount is also adjusted by CO₂, and lowered further with an EU certificate of conformity.
- Electric vehicles pay nothing, and every other vehicle pays at least €10 a year.
You also see the 6-month and 3-month amounts, which are 55% and 27.5% of the yearly fee. Every amount is rounded down to a whole euro. The calculator covers private cars and motorcycles. Vans, lorries, buses, taxis, special reductions and the one-off surcharge in a car's first year are left out.
Road tax examples
These examples use the same rules as the calculator:
- A car first registered in 2019 or later with 130 g/km pays 120 × €0.50 + 10 × €3 = €90 a year, €49 for 6 months or €24 for 3 months.
- The registration date matters. At 180 g/km, a car registered in 2019 or later pays €300 a year and a car registered from 2014 to 2018 pays €240.
- A 1,600 cc car with 150 g/km, first registered from 2007 to 2013, pays €98 a year, or €79 with an EU certificate of conformity. The same engine registered from 2004 to 2006 pays €117.
When and how to pay road tax
Since June 2024, road tax is renewed online on the Road Transport Department (RTD) portal, for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months. You enter the registration number and the last 3 digits of the owner's ID, then pay by card.
- Have valid insurance and, if your car is old enough to need one, a valid MOT.
- You have 70 days after your road tax expires to renew without a surcharge. After that, the late fee is €10 plus 10% of the tax due.
- Two 6-month renewals cost more than one year, so pay for 12 months if you can.

An estimate, with its source
The result is an estimate for a private car or motorcycle, not your bill. The RTD renewal page shows the exact amount before you pay.
The rates come from Law 86/1972 (Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Law), Annex I, as amended by laws 145(I)/2006, 1(I)/2014 and 47(I)/2019. Last verified on 19 October 2026.
Road tax calculator questions
How much is road tax for my car in Cyprus?
It depends on when the car was first registered in Cyprus and on its CO₂ emissions or engine size. For example, a car registered in 2019 or later with 130 g/km pays €90 a year. Enter your own details in the calculator to see the amount.
What do I need to use the calculator?
The year the car was first registered in Cyprus, and its CO₂ emissions or engine size. The CO₂ figure is on your registration certificate. If you only have the WLTP figure, divide it by 1.3.
Is the result the exact amount I will pay?
No, it is an estimate for private cars and motorcycles. The RTD renewal page shows the exact amount for your vehicle before you pay.
Is road tax cheaper if I pay for 6 months?
Each payment is smaller, but you pay more over the year. Six months costs 55% of the yearly fee, so two of them cost 110%.
Do electric cars pay road tax in Cyprus?
No. Electric vehicles pay no road tax, and the calculator shows €0.
