How penalty points add up
Every offence carries a number of points set by law. The calculator adds up the offences you pick and compares the total with the limit: 16 points within 2 years. Each point expires 2 years after it was given, so only the last two years count. Three examples:
- Up to 30% over the speed limit (1 point) and a phone in your hand (2 points) make 3 points, with 13 left.
- A red light (3), driving without insurance (3), no seat belt (3), crossing a continuous white line (2) and a phone in your hand (2) make 13 points, with 3 left.
- Two red lights (6), no seat belt (3), 51% to 75% over the speed limit (3), a phone in your hand (2) and a continuous white line (2) make 16 points, the limit.
The calculator uses the minimum points the law sets. Offences marked Court cannot be settled with an out-of-court fine, and a court can give more points than shown.
What happens at 16 points
At 16 points within 2 years, a court can disqualify you for up to 6 months, or up to 12 months if you were disqualified in the last 5 years. After a points disqualification, your points are wiped.
- At 16 points there is no out-of-court fine. A new offence that takes you to 16 or more goes straight to court.
- Paying a fine that carries points is not enough on its own. You also sign a declaration accepting the points.
- The limit is the same for everyone, including learners and new drivers.
The lower alcohol limit
The calculator asks for your alcohol limit because it changes the points for a given breath reading. The lower limit applies to learners, drivers in their first 3 years, motorcyclists and professional drivers. Everyone else has the standard limit.
Take a reading of 25 μg per 100 ml of breath. On the standard limit, it is the lowest drink-driving band: 1 point. On the lower limit, the same reading is 3 points.
How to check how many points you have
As of October 2026 there is no online points check. To find out your points, go to a police station with your ID card and ask. An online check through CY Login has been reported as in testing, and when it launches it will be on gov.cy. Until then, use the calculator to add up the fines you know about.
Source: section 20A of Law 86/1972, with the 16-point limit from Law 125(I)/2024 and the 2-year period from Law 33(I)/2025. The alcohol bands come from Road Safety Law 174/1986. Last verified on 19 October 2026.
Penalty points calculator questions
How many penalty points before I lose my licence in Cyprus?
16 points within 2 years. At that point a court can disqualify you for up to 6 months, or up to 12 months if you were disqualified in the last 5 years.
How do I find out how many points I have?
Ask at a police station with your ID card, because there is no online check yet. The calculator cannot see your record. It adds up the offences you enter.
How long do penalty points last?
Each point expires 2 years after it was given. Only the offences from the last two years count towards the limit of 16.
Do new drivers have a lower points limit?
No, the limit is 16 points for everyone. Learners and drivers in their first 3 years differ only in the lower alcohol limit, which you can switch on in the calculator.
Does paying a fine early remove the points?
No. A fine that carries points still adds them, and you sign a declaration accepting them. The law has no early-payment discount either: after 90 days the fine rises by 50%.
