Traffic fines, cameras and penalty points in Cyprus (2026)

Traffic fines in Cyprus are fixed by law, and most of them come with penalty points. This guide lists the fines for the most common offences, explains the points system and traffic cameras, and shows you how to check and pay a fine online.

Last checked: 17 October 2026, against the consolidated laws on CyLaw and gov.cy service pages. Amounts change when the law changes, so treat this as a guide and check the notice you receive.

Common fines and penalty points

These are out-of-court fines (εξώδικα). If you pay within the deadline, the case does not go to court.

OffenceFinePoints
Speeding, up to 30% over the limit€2 per km/h over1
Speeding, 31 to 50% over€3 per km/h over2
Speeding, 51 to 75% over€5 per km/h over3
Speeding, more than 75% overCourt4 to 8
Running a red light (past the stop line or crossing)€3003
Stopping on the pedestrian crossing at a red light€853
Mobile phone in your hand while driving€1502
No seatbelt, or a child without a suitable child seat€1503
No helmet on a motorcycle or moped€2003
Crossing a continuous white line€1502
No insurance€2003
No valid MOT (car)€150none
No road tax€85none
Expired driving licence€50none
Parking in a disabled bay€300none
Parking near a pedestrian crossing or bus stop€150none
Parking on the pavement€100none

Repeat offences cost more. For the phone, seatbelt and helmet offences, the fine doubles if you do the same thing again within three years. For the phone, the points double too.

Example: driving at 65 km/h in a 50 zone is 15 km/h over the limit (30%), so the fine is 15 x €2 = €30 and 1 point.

Drink-driving fines are in our guide to speed and alcohol limits.

How the penalty point system works

Each offence in the table adds points to your licence (βαθμοί ποινής).

  • The limit is 16 points within 2 years. If you reach it, the court can take your licence away. It was 12 points in 3 years until 2025, so older articles quote the wrong numbers.
  • Disqualification lasts up to 6 months, or up to 12 months if a court disqualified you in the last 5 years.
  • Points expire two years after they were given. After a points disqualification, your points are wiped.
  • Paying is not enough on its own. To settle a fine that carries points, you pay it and sign a declaration accepting the points.
  • At 16 points there is no out-of-court option. If a new fine would take you to 16 or more points, the case goes straight to court.

The same 16-point rule applies to everyone. There is no separate points limit for learners or new drivers.

Traffic cameras

Cyprus started camera enforcement in January 2022. The Ministry of Transport lists fixed cameras at 31 sites: 7 in Nicosia, 12 in Limassol, 7 in Larnaca and 5 in Paphos. Police also use mobile cameras, and since July 2026 a vehicle carrying a mobile speed camera must show an active roof light.

Cameras record:

  • speeding,
  • red-light offences,
  • other offences that are clear from the photo, such as no seatbelt or a phone in your hand.

Who gets the fine. The notice goes to the registered owner of the car, by registered post or in person, up to 180 days after the offence. If someone else was driving, the owner must name the driver in writing within 15 days. For a rental car, the renter on the contract is treated as the driver.

Fines are not sent by email or SMS. A bill to allow this was still under review in 2026.

How to check and pay a fine online

Check for camera fines. Go to cycamerasystem.com.cy and use the search for pending incidents. You enter the owner's ID type (Cypriot ID, alien registration certificate or passport), the ID number and the car's registration. You can also log in with the details printed on your notice to see the photo.

Pay a fine. Use the gov.cy service "Πληρωμή εξωδίκων προστίμων" (payment of out-of-court fines). It sends you to JCC Smart, where you need a free account and pay by card. Banks also accept payment.

Check for court warrants. If a fine has already gone to court, the gov.cy service for outstanding fine warrants lets you search on police.jccsmart.com.

Deadlines:

Time since you received the noticeWhat happens
Up to 90 daysPay the original amount
After 90 daysThe fine rises by 50%
After 105 daysThe police can take you to court

There is no official online service to check your points balance. Ask the police or the Road Transport Department.

Learners and new drivers

  • Same fines, same points. Learners and new drivers pay the same fines and collect points the same way.
  • Lower alcohol limit. Learners and anyone in their first three years of driving have a much lower alcohol limit, so even one drink can mean a fine.
  • Learner sign. Driving without the learner sign costs €50.
  • Motorways. Learners cannot use motorways, except with an instructor during a lesson or on the test.

A fine or a court case can hold up your progress, so learn the rules properly. The rules test and the road signs test help you practise both. You can also browse every sign in the road signs library.
