About additional markings in Cyprus
Additional markings are extra markers and small plates, often under another sign. They point out obstacles and sharp deviations, or show the distance, length or direction a sign applies to. We cover 17 of them.
Some mark hazards on the road itself: Obstacle, Obstacle left, Obstacle right, Sharp deviation to the left and Sharp deviation to the right. Others work as plates that add detail to a sign: Distance to the signed area, Length of the signed section, Start of restriction, Restriction continues, End of restriction, Restriction in the direction of the arrow and Restriction on both sides of the sign. The group also has Disabled drivers only and Icy road.
Small as they are, they can come up in the oral exam, where the examiner chooses what to show. Always read a plate together with the sign it belongs to, and learn the start, continues and end plates by their exact names.
Several of the 17 come in sets that differ only in direction or position: Obstacle, Obstacle left and Obstacle right; Sharp deviation to the left, to the right, and to the left or right; Restriction in the direction of the arrow and Restriction on both sides of the sign. Learn each set as a family, then look for the detail that tells its members apart. Distance to level crossing and Direction of priority road complete the group.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are additional markings on Cyprus roads?
They are extra markers and small plates that add information to a sign or point out something on the road, such as an obstacle, a sharp deviation or the distance a restriction covers. Many of them are fixed under another sign.
How many additional markings are there?
We cover 17, out of 240 signs in total. They include Obstacle, Sharp deviation to the left, Start of restriction and Icy road.
How do I tell Start of restriction, Restriction continues and End of restriction apart?
Read them as a sequence along the road: a restriction starts, continues and then ends. They are three separate signs in our list, so learn each one by its exact name and picture.
Are additional markings asked in the Cyprus theory exam?
The examiner chooses which signs to show, so any of them can come up. You say what each one means, in Greek or English.
