About priority signs in Cyprus
Priority signs decide who goes first. There are only 9 of them, one of our smallest categories, but they matter more than their number suggests: Stop, Give way, Priority road, End of priority road, Priority to traffic from your direction, Priority to traffic from opposite direction, Controlled block, Go ahead and Stop – school crossing patrol.
At a Stop sign you must stop behind the line, even if the road looks clear. At a Give way sign or marking you give way to traffic on the road you are joining. With no signs, lights or markings, the vehicle on the main road and the vehicle coming from your right have priority. At a roundabout, which goes clockwise, traffic already on it and coming from your right goes first.
Stop, give way, roundabout and priority signs are part of the oral theory exam, where the examiner shows you a sign and you say what it means. They are short names, so they are quick to learn. The Stop and Give way signs also appear as road markings.
Two signs are easy to mix up because their names are so close: Priority to traffic from your direction and Priority to traffic from opposite direction. Learn which one gives you the right of way and which one gives it to the other driver. Controlled block, Go ahead and Stop – school crossing patrol are less familiar, so give them an extra look before the exam.
