About warning signs in Cyprus
Warning signs tell you about a hazard before you reach it, so you have time to slow down. Most of them are triangles with a red border. We cover 75 warning signs, the largest of our 8 categories, so this is where learners usually need the most practice.
The group includes bends and junctions (Dangerous bend to the left, T junction), narrow or poor roads (Uneven road, Slippery road), and places where people or animals may be on the road (School crossing, Pedestrian crossing, Wild animals). It also has Roadworks, Tunnel, Roundabout and Traffic signals, plus signs that announce another sign, such as Give way ahead and Stop ahead.
The theory exam in Cyprus is oral: the examiner shows you a sign and you say what it means, in Greek or English. Many warning signs look alike, so compare the pictures closely and practise saying the full name out loud.
Take the 75 signs in groups rather than all at once. Start with bends and junctions, then crossings and animals, then hazards such as Risk of ice, Falling rocks, Side winds and Low flying helicopters. Level crossings have three signs in our list: Level crossing with barriers, Level crossing without barrier and Level crossing without barrier (at the crossing). The free road signs test shows you which ones you get wrong, so you know where to go back.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a red triangle mean on a road sign in Cyprus?
A triangle with a red border is a warning sign. It tells you about a hazard ahead, such as a bend, a junction, a crossing or roadworks, so you can slow down in time. It does not forbid anything by itself.
How many warning signs are there in Cyprus?
We cover 75 warning signs, out of 240 signs in total. They include bends, junctions, pedestrian and school crossings, animals, level crossings and road humps.
Are warning signs asked in the Cyprus theory exam?
The exam is oral and the examiner chooses which signs to show, so any warning sign can come up. You say what each one means, in Greek or English. Learn all 75 and check yourself with the free road signs test.
How is a warning sign different from a prohibitory sign?
A warning sign (mostly a red-bordered triangle) tells you what is ahead. A prohibitory sign (mostly a red-bordered circle) tells you what you must not do, such as enter or overtake.
