About mandatory signs in Cyprus

Mandatory signs give an order. Instead of warning you or banning something, they tell you what you must do, such as which way to go, which side of an obstacle to pass or the minimum speed. Most are blue circles. We cover 23 of them.

The group includes direction signs (Turn left, Go straight ahead only, Turn left or right ahead), signs for passing an obstacle (Keep left, Keep right, Pass on either side) and the Roundabout sign. Cyprus drives on the left and roundabouts go clockwise. Other signs reserve a route for certain users: Pedestrians only, Cycle route, Buses only. The group also has Minimum speed limit, End of minimum speed limit and Mandatory snow chains.

A good way to remember the difference: a red circle forbids, a blue circle orders. If you are unsure about a sign in the oral exam, its colour and shape give you a first clue. Then answer in a short, clear sentence, in Greek or English.

Several mandatory signs reserve a route for certain users: Pedestrians only, Cycle route, Segregated cycle and pedestrian route, Shared cycle and pedestrian route, Buses only and Buses and cycles only. Some names are almost identical, for example Turn left and Turn left ahead, or the two cycle and pedestrian routes. Learn the whole name and look closely at the picture, because a precise answer is better than a vague one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a blue circle mean on a road sign in Cyprus?

A blue circle is usually a mandatory sign. It tells you what you must do, such as turn left, keep left of an obstacle or use a cycle route.

How many mandatory signs are there in Cyprus?

We cover 23 mandatory signs, out of 240 signs in total. They are one of the smaller groups, so they are quick to learn.

What does the minimum speed limit sign mean?

It sets the lowest speed you may drive on that road, and going below it is an offence. It is cancelled by the End of minimum speed limit sign. Separately, police guidance gives 65 km/h as the minimum speed on Cyprus motorways.

How are mandatory signs different from information signs?

Mandatory signs (mostly blue circles) give an order you must follow. Information signs (usually blue or green rectangles) simply tell you something useful, such as a one-way street, parking or a bus stop.
