About road markings in Cyprus
Road markings are lines and symbols painted on the road. They say where you may overtake, where you may not park and where you must stop or give way. We cover 13 of them.
In Cyprus you drive on the left and overtake on the right, so the lines in the middle of the road matter: No overtaking (single line), No overtaking (double line), Overtaking is allowed and Overtaking is allowed from right. Lines along the edge show where you cannot park or stop: White side line, no parking, Yellow side line, no parking and Double yellow side line, no stopping or parking. The group also has Bus lane, Give way to traffic on main road, Stop and give way and Directions on roundabout.
The oral theory exam is mostly about signs, but some learners are also asked about road markings, so learn them too. Think of each marking as a sign painted on the road and give its meaning in a short sentence.
Do not treat markings as an afterthought. The Highway Code covers them in chapter G (Signs) together with the road signs, and our free printable PDF of all 240 signs gives them a category of their own. On a two-way road your side is the left, so the line next to you decides whether you may pull out to pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do the lines in the middle of the road mean in Cyprus?
A single or double continuous line means no overtaking, and you may not cross it. Other centre lines show that overtaking is allowed, or allowed from the right. Crossing a continuous white line costs €150 and 2 penalty points.
What do yellow lines at the side of the road mean in Cyprus?
A yellow side line means no parking, and a double yellow side line means no stopping or parking. A white side line also means no parking.
Which side do you overtake on in Cyprus?
On the right. Cyprus drives on the left, so you keep left and pull out to the right to pass, then move back to the left without cutting in.
Are road markings asked in the Cyprus theory exam?
The exam is oral and mainly about signs, but some learners are also asked about road markings and police hand signals. With only 13 markings, they are worth learning.
