About prohibitory signs in Cyprus
Prohibitory signs tell you what is not allowed on a stretch of road. Most are circles with a red border. Some set a limit, such as Maximum speed, Maximum weight and Maximum height, and others ban a manoeuvre or a type of vehicle. We cover 42 of them.
It helps to learn them in groups. Bans on entry and vehicles: No entry, No motor vehicles, No heavy goods vehicles, No cycling. Manoeuvres: No overtaking, No right turn, No left turn, No U-turn. Parking and stopping: No parking or waiting, No stopping, No parking zone. In Cyprus you drive on the left and overtake on the right, so No overtaking means you stay behind the vehicle ahead.
Pay special attention to the signs that end a restriction, such as End of no overtaking, End of maximum speed limit and End of all restrictions. They are easy to confuse with the signs that start one. If a sign shows a number, such as a speed or a weight, include it in your answer.
Some prohibitory signs apply to particular road users: No motor vehicles except motorcycles, No entry for mopeds, No agricultural vehicles, No horse drawn vehicles, No towed caravans and No hand carts. Others are about stopping rather than banning travel: Stop – police, Stop – customs and Stop – toll post. A red circle forbids, a blue circle orders and a red-bordered triangle warns, so the border colour and shape already narrow down what a sign can mean.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a red circle mean on a road sign in Cyprus?
A circle with a red border usually forbids something, such as entering, overtaking, parking or going above a speed limit. Blue circles are different: they tell you what you must do.
How many prohibitory signs are there in Cyprus?
We cover 42 prohibitory signs. They range from No entry and No overtaking to Maximum speed, Maximum height and No parking zone.
Which prohibitory signs are easy to confuse?
Look-alike pairs cause most mistakes, for example No entry and No vehicles, or a restriction and its end, such as No overtaking and End of no overtaking. Compare them side by side and learn the exact name of each.
Do I need to say the numbers on the signs?
Yes. Signs such as Maximum speed, Maximum weight and Maximum height show a figure, and your answer should include it. Say the name of the sign together with the number.
